Being Christian in Today’s World

Christianity, Secular States, Pluralistic Societies: Practical Realities of Life

Are the Christian Conscience and Faith compatible with the laws of the land and the values/beliefs of other people in our diverse societies? Where are these in conflict with each other? And what exactly should we do?

These questions are not just about abstract philosophizing. They confront us in the most fundamental dimensions of our lives. For example, they can challenge me in:
a. My decisions as a professional and in earning a living,
b. My behaviour and example in society; how I behave with others who have beliefs and values different from and even contradictory to my own. How should I express the compassion and empathy mandated by my faith in my relationship with others of a different faith or no faith at all? Is it my task as Christian to accept others as they are or must I evangelize, and if so, how?
c. My conduct in the areas of civic and political responsibility where the law of the land may conflict sharply with my Christian Faith.

Our workshop begins an exploration of these issues. It is to be an intensely interactive discussion coalescing around key presentations by a Distinguished Lay Keynote Speaker, Two Catholic Priests/Theologians as Focal Points of Reference and the questions, insights and thinking of the workshop participants. As we debate the issues we will seek to find the quality of discernment without which there can be no answers to these questions. It is time to talk to each other, to listen and to journey together.

The Keynote Speaker:
Our multi-dimensional Keynote Speaker is drawn from the rough and tumble of the “real world”. He is, among several other things:
● An internationally renowned Film Producer, Director, Writer, and Actor
● A medical doctor specializing in tropical diseases, who serves with Doctors without Borders, most recently in Syria
● A PhD in Theology from the Gregorianum, Rome, Italy.
