O Come, O Come Emmanuel song
Listen to that E minor scale. This melody is documented to at least the
15th century. The scale itself is almost twice as old; monks were
crafting the modes and scales that would define Christian and later all
Western music when Vikings were around.
The emotional power of a minor scalar melody (one that uses the notes of
the scale rather than the notes the chords played) is utilized to this
day. Listen to Scarborough Fair, in particular the Simon and Garfunkel
version, or Parabol by Tool, both of which are also played in E minor.
You can hear the same notes and similar melodic patterns that give the
songs their spiritual, holy tranquility.
